WASHINGTON -- Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said today he favors immediately closing the Guantanamo Bay military prison and moving its detainees to U.S. facilities.

The prison, which now holds about 380 suspected terrorists, has tarnished the world's perception of the United States, Powell said.

"If it was up to me, I would close Guantanamo. Not tomorrow, but this afternoon. I'd close it," he said.

"And I would not let any of those people go," he said. "I would simply move them to the United States and put them into our federal legal system. The concern was, well then they'll have access to lawyers, then they'll have access to writs of habeas corpus. So what? Let them. Isn't that what our system is all about?"

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said Congress and the Bush administration should work together to allow imprisonment of some of the more dangerous detainees elsewhere so the military camp at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba can be closed.

The Defense Department estimates it would take about three years to conduct 60 to 80 military commission trials, if the administration decides to hold that many.

Some Democrats in Congress have sought to close the camp, which occupies part of the Navy's base in Guantanamo Bay. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and other lawmakers have proposed shuttering the camp and shifting the commission trials to the U.S.

Powell, who was secretary of state under President Bush, said the U.S. should do away with the military commission system in favor of procedures already established in federal law or the manual for courts-martial.

"I would also do it because every morning, I pick up a paper and some authoritarian figure, some person somewhere, is using Guantanamo to hide their own misdeeds," Powell said. "And so essentially, we have shaken the belief that the world had in America's justice system by keeping a place like Guantanamo open and creating things like the military commission.

"We don't need it, and it's causing us far more damage than any good we get for it," he said.

Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee said he believes the prison should remain open.

"It's more symbolic than it is a substantive issue, because people perceive of mistreatment when, in fact, there are extraordinary means being taken to make sure these detainees are being given, really, every consideration," said Huckabee, a former Arkansas governor.

"But I'll tell you, if we let somebody out and it turns out that they come and fly an airliner into one of our skyscrapers, we're going to be asking, how come we didn't stop them? We had them detained," Huckabee said.

"I can tell you, most of our prisoners would love to be in a facility more like Guantanamo and less like the state prisons that people are in in the United States," he said.

Powell spoke on "Meet the Press on NBC." Huckabee was on "Late Edition" on CNN.

Both of the link has the same news word to word. Both of them referred the same source '' The Saptahik Jonatar Chuk'' . I have tried to get from all of friends around the world where is from that '' The Saptahik Jonatar Chuk'' published. But I have failed to get the accuracy of their source.

What ever the source, I would like to get some points of the contents. Before that please have some facts about the persons mentioned in the reports.

I think all those are simply Intentional part. I am Just feeling that those people are finding some ways to take Tasneem inside again for unnecessary reasons and they want to seek attention. Now I feel those Journalist know each and every one of us and they know Asif and Naeem even very well . Other wise why will they change Modhupur to Mohammod pur. Another funny statement is about garbage middle class people. 'These type of comments are simply to create negative feelings on the mind of people.

Basically we have two problems Asif is VP of a really good organisation. Thirty-four-year-old Rubel Ahsan has been working in the IT industry in Silicon Valley, California for the last 10 years. Rubel Ahsan is doing well some how quite ok. More or less every one of us has stable professional carrier. Basically It is very easy to highlight Our so called political standing and all that we can't write much on those from Foreign land.

My analysis and comments of the claims:

1. Joy & Tasneem's comment about LORC (?): These are personal opinions and analysis of the situation. As concerned citizens, everyone has the right to analyse the political scenario.

2. "All these garbage -- middle class people", "Hot button to drive them away"-- Don't these seem out of context ? "Joy doesn';t give patta about constitution and democracy" -- Ludicrous. These things must be quoted out of context.

3. "Asif Saleh funds" -- as Asif bhai has claraified, it's the Modhupur fund of DP. See the note to ''The Amder Shomoy'' from Asif and Naeem.

6. "Anti Dr. Yunus film" -- There had been lots of anti AL, anti BNP films. So anti Yunus film is no big deal.

7. "B. Umar and Anu Md interview" -- both are anti Dr. Yunus.

8. "Tareq and Hasina news" -- source is DGFI. Seems to be correct.

9. "Exit strategy of army, Tofail Amu gong, " -- Political analysis.

10. " the sooner the army takes over, the better -- Joy" -- out of context.

11. "Lobbying of Dr. Kamal" -- infomration from Joy. Also seems to be correct.

12. Rubel Ahsan, Tasneem & arafat (lakh lakh dollar transaction) -- No idea what they are talking about .

So i would like to request all the yellow journalist to maintain the Rules of Journalism which they have. The journalist can save the nation from corruption. But what happen if they themselves were living i n yellow journalism and corruption?

Tuesday night an Islami Chatro Shibir Leader in Pabna was arrested by RAB and then released as usually. You can see the news in the Prothom Alo.

There is another news that has not been published anywhere. Tanu Das Gupta, a student of BBA in Leading University, Sylhet has been arrested Tuesday morning at 11.30 am under the act 54 and tortured a lot and then thrown to PS.

I have collected the FIR that is just a rubbish else nothing. Look how a non-political innocent guy was arrested twice for beating the so called 'source of JF'. Have a look to the FIR.

1. If you are Islami Chatro Shibir minded, you will not be charged anything if there were many valid reasons.
2. If you are out of Jamati , you will be arrested twice under clause 54 and thrown to Jail.

1. Is there any official post in JF as ' source'?
2.Is it acceptable anything like attached here as FIR/GD without naming any victimized person?
3.If anyone has been freed via honorable court at anytime for arresting under 54, is it legal to arrest him again under clause 54?
4.Can P.S declared anybody as ' SONTRASI' without proving anything in the recent past?
5. Who is administrating the JF in Habiganj? Is it administrating by the so called 'source'?

I think you can get more points from the attached FIR/GD.

N.B: PS of Habiganj has applied for 5 Days remand to torture him again. I don't understand what they are asking for to him? He was remanded before for 1 day but they did not find any thing illegal with him. SO why again ?

Custodial Deaths in Bangladesh

A Bangladesh rights group has recorded 89 custodial deaths and detention of over 175, 000 people during the four months of the state of emergency, proclaimed in January this year.

According to Odhiker, a coalition for the human rights organisations in Bangladesh, lawmen killed 89 people, 49 of whom were killed in shootouts by the elite Rapid Action Battalion, since the Fakhruddin Ahmed's interim government sworn in. The Odhiker released the report on Saturday. The group expressed deep concern over the violation of human rights in the country and demanded probe into all the extra-judicial killings by the law enforcers. It also asked the government to make public the findings of those inquiries.

In Bangladesh civil and political rights are suspended under the Emergency Powers Rule in line the with the January 11 presidential proclamation of the state of emergency. After assumption in office, the interim administration launched countrywide hunt against corruption, resulting in overcrowd in the jails across the country.

According to available statistics, the law enforcers arrested 175,435 people for their alleged involvement in the crime and corruption under the past political governments. A handful of the detainees were releases while the rest are languishing in jail.

Among the 89 people killed during the period, four were activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, four from the Awami League, six of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (Janajuddha), four of underground Purba Banglar Communist Party, three of extremist Purba Banglar Communist Party (Red Flag), two of outlawed Biplobi Communist Party, one of extremist New Biplobi Communist Party, two of underground Gana Mukti Fauj, one of Jatiya Samajantrik Dal, three of Sramajibi Mukti Andolan and four of extremist Sarbahara Party.

One of them was a freedom fighter, one was an indigenous leader and another was reportedly an operative of an extremist group, according to the Odhiker report. Odhikar demanded independent inquiries of all the extra-judicial killings or deaths in custody. It also demanded that the results of all such inquiries should be made public.

It also condemned brief detention of journalist Tasneem Khalil for questioning by the army-led joint forces and has termed it as 'act of intimidation' against human rights defenders.

“IF YOU step on the tail of a snake, you have to kill it,” said one of Bangladesh's senior politicians when the military-backed interim government that seized power in January attempted to exile the country's two leading politicians: the feuding begums, Khaleda Zia of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Sheikh Hasina Wajed of the Awami League.

The attempt has ended in failure. This week the government, under domestic and international pressure, abandoned its efforts to keep Sheikh Hasina, a former prime minister, from returning from abroad. She swept back to the sort of welcome usually reserved for rock stars, despite the government's best efforts to prevent her supporters gathering. Even Mrs Zia, prime minister until last October, whom the government also tried to push into exile, welcomed her rival's return.

With its “minus-two solution” in a shambles, the emergency government has to deal with the consequences. It may hope the courts will convict the many civilian politicians whom its army sponsors have arrested, including most of the leaders of the two main parties. Sheikh Hasina herself faces murder and corruption charges. But if the courts do not oblige—and charges against politicians have never brought convictions in the past—Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh's first president, will be favourite to become the next prime minister, assuming elections are held by the end of 2008, as the government has promised.

It seems Bangladesh will not get the clean break from feudal politics that many had hoped for. Last week Muhammad Yunus, a micro-credit pioneer and winner of last year's Nobel prize for peace, reversed his decision to enter the country's messy politics. Meanwhile, Mrs Zia, whose elder son is in prison accused of corruption, has appointed her younger brother vice-president of her party.

It all seems so predictable. To its credit, the emergency government has aimed to end a culture of impunity in a state rotten with corruption. It has tried to improve the judiciary, stabilise the economy and promised, though so far failed, to put an end to the brutality of its security forces. It has also shown a soldierly taste for micro-managing civilians—including enforcing “no honking zones” in the capital.

But the government's main aim, by its own declaration, is to make Bangladesh's political parties behave more lawfully and democratically. It is hard to know how it will achieve this, unless by force or by suspending elections—steps that would be neither lawful nor democratic.

Folks,

I had a strong support for one of the two ever feuding parties over the other. I know both are bad. Both are bad because we are bad. We vote for them. We become a party of their corruption. We take part in thier destructive so called legitimate democratic movement, hartal, garao/aborhod, bangchur, Jalao-porao, killing campaign of the opposition camps by logi-boita-lathi or guns. We help them making mess of business, economy and communication. We destroy lives and propery. We kill our brothers as the leaders tell us, “they are your enemies”. And even we don’t hesitate to get ourselves killed.

So only the politicians are not blameworthy, we the stupid people who always claimed to be politically conscious are equally responsible of our self-demolition. We vote for them, rig vote for them, we donate and extort money for them, we fuel their fund.

We fail to condemn when our leader isnstruct us if one of us is killed, Kill 10 of them. We fail to condemn when our leader says, Police families and their wives, children have no right to live as police have killed our worker.

We are politically addicted/drunk. Alcholic abusers or drug addicted people may brag they know the different brand names of alchohol or drugs they drink or use. But they really don’t know how do they work and how they kill them. Like-wise we are proud our people are politically conscious but in fact we are polictically addicted population.

We don’t know what politics and democracy are and how they can work for us. WE NEED TO WAKE UP.

Every body must need to study and learn politics so that we can be true political or democratic activist, not the addict.

We need to know about politics as we know A,B,C,D… the alphabet, otherwise, we will be the just prey of crooked corrupt self-seeking politics. One international reknown socialistic politcian once said, ''Politics is too important in life to leave only with politician.''

As I said before I had a strong support for one party. But as I see the country’s interest over party interest I’m now in favor of banning BNP, AWL and Jamat for a fresh start, hopefully a better and brighter polity for the country that suffered too long under the yokes of this trio cataclasmic politics.

After failure of the EXILE formula / PLAN A, the CTG has already started PLAN B . All of the banks in BD have been asked for to send the bank details of Hasina and Khaleda to the CENTRAL BANK. Though Bank clients feel discomfort , we are happy about this kind of investigation.

Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina last night told The Daily Star, “Why running around for the information? I have already submitted those [wealth statements] to the Election Commission along with my nomination papers.”

Asked about the reported Tk 2-3 crore in her accounts, she said, “The money belongs to Bangabandhu Memorial Trust.”

She added, “People and organisations from across the globe donate to the Trust. I can’t tell you exactly how much money it has. The chief accountant could give the specifics.”

She has a joint account with her sister Sheikh Rehana but that is not supposed to have such a big deposit, Hasina said adding that she won’t be surprised if somebody had put the money there to fit her up.

Despite repeated attempts, neither Khaleda nor any member of her family could be contacted for reaction.

I use to be on online most of my time. But I have no idea about blogging before I have got the blog address of Sajeeb W Joy in the Awami League website. Then I went to blog site of Joy and find world of BLOG. Its really amazing!

I signed up and unfortunately I have not got the id same as my name ‘sushanta’. Then I had to taken http://www.sushantaa.blogspot.com/. I started writings in blog but I have faced terrific comments on my blog. Then I started moderation. More trouble for Sheikh Hasina

Last week I was totally absconded from my normal life. I was running to get the latest news about Sk. Hasina.

I attended the program of Sk Hasina at London. After the meeting i went to Rehana's home to get more info about Hasina's strategy.

Hasina looked very confident before the past I met her. But finally she did not get the boarding pass in BA. So now she is in Rehana's house.

What finally worked was the threat the Bangladesh government issued to the British airliner saying "if they carry her, the government would not let the flight of the internationally renowned airlines to land in Dhaka".

BA authorities informed Hasina of the reasons why they could not fly her.

Meanwhile, two British MPs were assisting the former Bangladesh premier at the airport in getting airline's permission.

British lawmaker Emily Thornbery told Hasina that she would discuss the issue with British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett and also will raise it in parliament.

I will be running to her to get the next step.

Last week, I have passed my free time with Joy Daa. He has recently come to London as a student. I did not know him before. But Alok, the brother of my best friend Polok, introduecd me with Joy da. Joy daa is a AGRI Unversity Graduate. But now he is struggling here very much. I am pussing him to take money from BD to start his course in a University in London. But he cant manage his parients. As per know they are very rich person. But they are asking Joy daa to manage the tuition fees with doing JOB! How strange it is to manage it. His parients has no idea about London Life.

Joy daa is now doing job in a BD restaurent. Do u belive he is choping thousands of onion in a day? I feel very sad for him . But What can he do without choping onion?

It is now a settled issue that DMY is in politics. He has selected a nice name ''The Citizen's Power'.

But DMY has been starting to do wrong by the way:

He has mentioned a wrong address in his OPEN letter. By doing this, he has insulted some one who has strong contribution to get our freedom. Please read the link http://bhorerkagoj.net/online/news.php?id=43922&sys=3.

Selecting the name ‘DMY Somorthok Gusti ’ is another misdeeds which just seems to be creating another personality cult around himself.

So just wait. What the Citizen’s Power can do?

Salam..

First of all I would like to introduce myself. I was a student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet. Batch (95-99). Now studying in MBA in London, UK.

I have read your open letter with very concentration. And would like to make some question to you.
1. It is not understood in your letter who, the people of Bangladesh, has been requesting you to start politics in Bangladesh. I think only some of people who wants to diminish your image is doing so. If it has been requested from the Running Caretaker Govt. or UE, UNO, UK, USA, Tuesday Group etc, then you should be informed that this request is not from the mass people of Bangladesh.
2. You should be known about the population who are well informed about the Noble Prize. Only a few people know about the Noble Prize and its value. Other is fully unknown to this matter. Noble Prize cannot bring success to the Bangladeshi People. You should not take the risk to take part in Politics.
3. Please let us know what are the views of you on the following matter: ·
· Offender of Independence like Nijami, Gulam Ajam etc
· Fundamentalism to Religion
· Foreign Policy to India and Pakistan
· Ideology to FOTWA
· Income got by Interest VS ISLAM

On the above matter you have not cleared your concept yet. In which concept you will run your party? Is it Central-Right Party or Central- Left Party? I would like to make those questions you because; all the Bengali people are hypnotized by those topics. So before starting to Bangladesh Politics you must declare the answer of above question. .
